| Roger Dean's work is much more ethereal and less involved with the daily grind of the human estate than Frank Frazetta's - the inspiration behind their works was very different. Many of these images are from Roger Dean's book 'Magnetic Storm', which has been in my collection since it was published in 1984.
Dean created a stunning sense of peace and the vast reaches of an other-worldly space in so many of his paintings, that even today is something quite unique.
He has a great instinct for the value of negative space and empty space in his work - very classy design and balance that adds to the impact. And totally inventive in the truest sense, with a wonderful feeling of playfulness echoing through his landscapes and the fantastical animals that inhabit them.
If you've seen the movie "Avatar" and wonder why these images seem familiar - yes, director James Cameron ripped off many of Roger Dean's designs and concepts, and used them with not so much as a single credit to their creator. Bad, bad stuff. | |
