My parents bought me several small art books, all from the same "How To" series published by The Studio in London. One was "How To Draw Farm Animals" illustrated by C F Tunnicliffe, and of course at that time I was too young to appreciate his great reputation and enormous output.

There was also "How To Draw Birds" by Raymond Sheppard "Baby Animals On The Farm" by Vere Temple and another, the name of which escapes me. Thank goodness for the Internet - I am gradually tracking them down.

Like Ron Embleton, Charles Tunnicliffe was another great anatomist - mainly with birds and animals, but whenever he does include a human being in any of his works, they are always totally 'right' and convincing.

Tunnicliffe - Canada Geese
Tunnicliffe - Tawny Owl
Tunnicliffe - Rooks (Detail)
Tunnicliffe - Eider Ducks
Tunnicliffe - Barnacle Geese
Tunnicliffe - Widgeon

I wish I still had those books, but I AM enjoying tracking down the works of this great artist and illustrator. The above (except the Snowy Owl and drawing book cover) are photographs of illustrations from "Bird Portraiture", which I purchased recently. I'll add some more soon.

Tunnicliffe's illustrations were used in at least 250 books.

He was much honored:

  • 1944 - Associate of the Royal Academy
  • 1954 - Fellow of the Royal Academy
  • 1975 - RSPB Gold Medal
  • 1978 - Order of the British Empire - OBE
